Lakota-immersion education model emerges in South Dakota

For the third time in five years, Native American legislators and supporters have proposed legislation for state-funded charter schools aimed at immersing students in Lakota Indian language, culture and history.
And once again, the measure failed. State House representatives on the education committee on March 2 voted 8-4 to kill Senate Bill 139, which had been passed by the Senate.
